Unboxing & authenticity checks
Start by inspecting the box and contents. Trezor devices ship in tamper-evident packaging. Confirm the seal is intact and that the package includes the device, recovery card, USB cable, and documentation. If anything looks tampered with, contact official support before proceeding.
Check the device model and serial number against the information printed on the box. Authentic devices have clear manufacturing marks and the Trezor logo. Do not use devices purchased from unverified third-party sellers unless you can verify authenticity.
Connect & initial power-up
Use the supplied USB cable to connect your Trezor to your computer. For mobile or USB-C laptops, ensure adapters are genuine and in good condition. Once connected, open Trezor Suite® or navigate to trezor.io/start which will redirect you to the recommended setup flow.
On power-up, your device screen will show a welcome message and prompt you to either create a new wallet or recover an existing one. Do not skip firmware verification steps if prompted.
Create a new wallet or recover an existing one
You’ll be given two choices: create a brand new wallet (the device generates a fresh recovery seed) or recover an existing wallet using your recovery seed words.
For a new wallet, the device will display a sequence of words (the recovery seed). Write these words down on the provided recovery card in the exact order shown. Double-check spelling and sequence. If you're recovering a wallet, enter the words exactly as previously recorded. Never store the seed in cloud storage or take photos of it.
After writing down your seed, the device will ask you to confirm a few words to ensure you recorded it correctly. Finish by setting a PIN to protect the device from unauthorized physical use.
Security checklist (must-do)
- Seed never digital: Never type, photograph, or copy your recovery seed into any electronic device or cloud service.
- Use official software: Only use Trezor Suite® or other recommended wallets listed on Trezor Learn.
- Verify firmware: Confirm firmware updates on the device screen and install only from official sources. See firmware info.
- Set a PIN: Choose a PIN you can remember but that is not easily guessed.
- Consider passphrase: Advanced users can enable a passphrase for an extra hidden wallet—only use this if you understand the risks.
Receiving and sending — your first transaction
To receive funds, open Trezor Suite® and select the account for the cryptocurrency. Generate a receiving address and verify the address shown in Suite with the address displayed on your Trezor device screen — they must match. Only then share the receiving address with the sender.
To send funds, construct the transaction in Suite, check the recipient address, amount, and fees carefully, and then confirm the details on the Trezor device screen before approving. The private keys never leave the device; confirming on the device ensures the transaction is exactly what you intend.
Troubleshooting & tips
If your device is not recognized, try the following:
- Try a different USB cable or port.
- Install or update Trezor Bridge® from trezor.io/bridge.
- Restart your computer and reconnect the device.
- If firmware installation fails, contact support rather than entering your seed into any site.
Long-term backup & resilience
Consider creating multiple physical backups of your recovery seed (e.g., two copies in separate secure locations). Use fireproof and waterproof storage options if possible. For people with larger holdings, consider metal backup plates for additional physical durability.
Review your backup plan periodically and ensure trusted heirs or legal mechanisms are in place if you wish others to access assets in case of emergency. Be cautious: sharing seed information with others transfers full control of the funds.
